Pool Leak Repair

A leak caused by a crack in your swimming pool can cause lots of damage and stress if not treated quickly and properly. A pool leak can be caused by mechanical issues with your equipment, structural issues with your pool itself, broken or loose pool plumbing, or any combination of those.

If left untreated, a pool leak can cause severe foundation damage as the water finds its way in and around the soil underneath your pool, eroding it and potentially causing a sinkhole. Some less severe problems caused by a pool leak include soggy ground, discoloration on your pool decking, potential electrical damage, and wasted money from the loss of water.

The team of plumbers at PoolMaxx has been detecting and fixing pool leaks and cracks for more than 20 years. We use a series of non-invasive methods to detect the source of your leak(s) which helps determine which type of leak repair your pool requires.

How Do I Know if My Pool is Leaking?

An easy, rudimentary way for a homeowner to test their own pool for a leak is by using the bucket test. All you will need to complete this test is a 5-gallon bucket and a marker or tape.

Here’s how to perform the bucket test to see if your pool is leaking;

  1. Take your bucket and place it on one of the steps in your pool so that it is partially submerged in water. You will then fill the bucket with water up to a level that is equal to that of the pool water it is submerged in. With your marker or tape, mark the water level of the bucket on the inside of your bucket.
  2. Turn off your pool pump, heater, refill equipment, etc. (so that no water is flowing through your plumbing), and leave the bucket in the pool for 24 to 48 hours.
  3. After waiting 24 to 48 hours, compare the level of the water in the pool to the line you marked previously inside the bucket. If both the bucket and pool water have dropped but are still pretty much equal, you are just losing water to evaporation. If the level of the water in the pool is below the line inside your bucket and also below the water level of the bucket, you most likely have a pool leak.
  4. To further determine the source of your pool leak, you will repeat this test but with your pool equipment on for the 24 to 48 hour cycle. If you notice that the difference in water levels is even greater with your pool equipment running, then you most likely have a leak within your pool’s plumbing.

This method is good for anybody who wants an initial determination before scheduling a pool leak detection appointment. It is always recommended to hire a professional to help determine the exact source of your leak and any potential underlying problems with your pool.
